I’m not a crafty person. Let’s get that out of the way. So when it came time for me to take on DIY wedding projects, specifically my wedding invitations, I started to worry that if I wrote them out myself, they would end up looking like a 9-year-old who was learning how to write in cursive…with their eyes closed.
As I was admiring my co-worker’s fabulous handwriting at work one day, I asked her if she would help me with my invitations. She generously agreed to take my penmanship-challenged case pro bono and I fortunately was able to spare the eyes’ of my wedding guests.
For those of you not gifted in the way of the glue gun, pen and scissors, here are some suggestions to help with your DIY wedding projects:
Enlist a crafty friend or family member
Everyone seems to have a friend or family member who enjoys making crafts. You know…that one person we are so deeply envious of because they’re just good at EVERYTHING. My co-worker was a life-saver and my wedding invites were addressed better than I could have ever hoped. Not to mention, we had a great evening drinking wine and chatting (bonus)!
Visit “handmade” websites
If your budget allows, hire someone to make your wedding projects for you. I realized that I actually saved money in the long run because I wasn’t constantly spending money for “trial-runs,” of the project….and by trial runs, I mean 100 fruitless attempts to get it right just once. And inevitably, time becomes an issue as I always run out of some necessary items for a project and have to make several trips back to the store. Gas prices are no joke you guys!
Two of my favorite websites to check out for fantastic DIY-looking items are Etsy and Zazzle. I ordered my wedding invitations, birdcage veil and flower girl dress from Etsy—and had a GREAT experience. Not to mention, my items were one-of-a-kind and custom made just for me. And made me look like I knew what I was doing!
I used Zazzle to order labels for my wedding invitations and personalized postcards (to use as my “guestbook”), both of which turned out wonderfully. Affordable and professional…couldn’t ask for more.
