The 411 On Buying an Awesome Wedding Band
by Caroline Young

wedding band
wedding band

Taylor Lord Photography

I guess I must be pretty clueless because for the longest time, I didn't realize there was actually a separate wedding band involved in the whole wedding . I just assumed that the groom put the original engagement ring on the bride, and the bride put a ring on the groom because it would be totally unfair if he didn't get one too! Maybe I was so blinded and bedazzled by the carats of diamonds that I failed to notice its less-blinged out counterpart.

However, the wedding band is of considerable significance to your wedding ceremony. Not only is it a sort of pledge of everlasting love, but is anyone really going to complain about the aesthetics or ceremonial pomp and celebration behind putting a ring on it? Nope, zilch, nada. Here's my run-down on the nitty-gritty of wedding bands.

Keep it Simple

wedding band
wedding band

Blue Rose Photography

The point of a wedding band (besides to signify your everlasting love for your spouse) is to complement your engagement ring, not clash with it. As such, depending on how dazzling your stone is, you'll want to match your wedding band to look like an extension of your engagement ring.

Sometimes, brides have unusually shaped stones (with twists or large solitaire jewels). If that's the case, it might be worth looking into getting a band custom-made to fit your engagement ring. However, retailers such as Kay Jewelers and Blue Nile should have an extensive collection of wedding bands styles. If you're looking for something a little more unique, than try out Etsy or your local jeweler -- you never know what great pieces you'll find.

How expensive is expensive?

wedding band
wedding band

Helen John Photography

Well, it depends on what quality you want your wedding band to be. Since wedding bands tend to be less extravagant than engagement rings, they tend to be not as expensive -- however, it doesn't prevent costs spiking up to as high as a grand for a simple band.

Costs are pretty dependent on what type of jewelry metal you purchase your ring as. White gold and platinum tend to be very expensive but look very elegant by themselves. Yellow gold can be a little harsh, so it would really be a matter of trial-and-error to see if it matches with your engagement ring. Tungsten and titanium are a popular choice for more durable wedding bands, especially since they seem to be less prone to nicks and dings during  intensive manual work -- men in particular especially seem to like these metals. Overall, I'd say that wedding bands can range from $20-$850+, depending on how detailed you want your wedding band to be.

Additionally, any extra embellishments such as embedding small stones into your band can alter the cost as well. Simple pave bands are a popular choice for adding some extra shine to your engagement ring, but keep in mind that the cost of those stones will drive up overall costs. You can also customize your wedding band to your own liking, whether it be giving the rings an inscription or carving a pattern into them.

For me, I purchased a very simple 3 mm sterling silver band from Eve's Addiction for around $20, and it serves its purpose quite well as a beautiful complementary piece to my more detailed Bali style ring. It just goes to show that you don't have to pull out the big bucks to find a ring that suits your purpose.

Mix and Match

wedding band
wedding band

Dan and Melissa Photography

While  I generally tend to pair my jewelry with similar metals, sometimes having jewelry of the same tone unexpectedly clashes. And it's not a cardinal sin to mix the metals of your rings either. Often times, it can create a beautifully hued and stunning look.

However, it can be difficult to mix metals because how good good metals look largely depends on your skin. People with pale skin or cool skin tones tend to look best with more white/silver jewelry metals whereas people with richer, earth-toned skins tend to look best with warm metals such as gold or rose gold. Hence, the best way to decide whether or not you should mix or match your ring metals is to experiment. If gold washes your skin out and makes you look sickly pale, you'll probably want to avoid using that jewelry metal in general. However, very unorthodox and unique combinations can be made, so don't be afraid to go to a local jeweler and shop around.

A crowd favorite does seem to be white gold though -- it has enough of a goldish hue to keep it warm, but its likelihood of having rhodium plating keeps it on the cooler side as well. It's the best of both worlds.

Do I have to wear the engagement ring with the wedding band?

wedding band
wedding band

Bethany Erin Photography

While it's nice to have your wedding band match and complement your engagement ring, you don't actually have to wear them both together. It's wholly up to you and your lifestyle.

If you're a professional chef who is constantly shifting her hands around, you definitely don't want to accidentally snap off the rock off of your engagement ring and have it hurtle down a sink. In this case, it would be appropriate to have a wedding band and buy a wedding band that can stand on its own as a functional ring. If you have a ring that has curved edges or unique setting and need your ring to match it, consider how often you would actually wear your engagement ring to merit the purchase of buying a customized wedding band. If you don't plan to wear your engagement ring very often but prefer a simpler band instead, it might be useful just investing in a wedding band that looks good on its own.

Make Your Own!

wedding band
wedding band

Geoff Johnson Photography

For the adventurous couple who thinks that nicks and dings just add to the beauty of things, maybe the perfect wedding bands are the ones that you make yourself. There are plenty of classes taught by master jewelers who will teach you and your beloved fiancee to forge, sweat, and bang away until you make the most awesome wedding bands ever.

Go to local jewelry stores and ask if they offer any classes or know of any other jewelers that offer those sort of custom-forging classes. You can also check Google or Yelp for reviews on any local classes to see which option is best.

Now I'm super curious -- what wedding bands did you buy to best complement your engagement ring? Why'd you choose that one specifically? Comment below!

9 Last Minute Wedding Details You Don't Want to Forget
by Caroline Young

last minute wedding details
last minute wedding details

Patrick Moyer Photography

In the hustle and bustle of all the day-of excitement, it's very easy for even the most detail-oriented bride to forget to take care of some last minute wedding details, whether it be to make sure Aunt Vicky's all-vegan, gluten-free dish with the special heirloom tomatoes is accounted for or to pop a couple of breath mints before the big kiss.  Heck, I know I would DEFINITELY forget something on my wedding day, if not multiple things.

Hence, I've made this list of what I think is most important of the last minute wedding details that threaten to ruin your big day (so sorry I can't find an embroidered velvet pillow for Uncle Harry's Shih Tzu). Here goes!

Remember to get your marriage license

last minute wedding details

Michael Kaal Photography

Without the license, you can't get married. And your officiant can't provide it for you, so you and your spouse are going to have to hop on over to city hall to apply to get married. This should take place approximately a week before your wedding. So, this task will be during one of the most stressful weeks of your life, but make sure it's your top priority until you get it safely out of the way.

Bring snacks and refreshments!

last minute wedding details
last minute wedding details

Spottswood Photography

I feel like this is a huge minor detail that people often overlook, but just because it's your big wedding day and you feel like you can take on the world doesn't mean that your biological systems can (no offense). In short, don't let you or your wedding party become hangry!

When you're getting ready with your bridesmaids or groomsmen, make sure that there are finger foods and refreshments to snack on. No sense in making a huge mess while getting ready, but there's no sense in allowing your stomach to go empty, especially since bridal parties start getting ready in the late morning or early afternoon.

Pack for your honeymoon

THIS. Your wedding is such a huge event that it's probably blocking out the peripherals of your mind as well. But don't leave it to the last minute to throw everything into one huge suitcase and hope for the best as you embark on your honeymoon! Research weather conditions and what attire you would need for activities in your honeymoon location, and try to pack ahead of time. You don't have to cram packing all in one session -- keep in mind that this is three hours of your time that could have been spread out in your spare time before the wedding. You don't want to be spending precious honeymoon time choosing which pair of socks you should bring on your trip.

Update your wedding website with day-of information

last minute wedding details
last minute wedding details

Bliss and Bone

This can include anything from projected weather and traffic conditions to last-minute updates on wedding logistics if they seem to be changing. As much as we pray for it not to happen, there's usually a hiccup or two waiting for you at the venue. If you need to relay information fast, make sure to distribute it to guests who are present and update the wedding website for those who aren't. Most days, guests have a data plan and access to a smart phone -- and word-of-mouth travels fastest.

Have payment and tip sorted out before the big day

last minute wedding details
last minute wedding details

This means having paid the necessary deposits still need to fulfill or completing final payments if that's within your power. Additionally, calculate tip and put the payment in separate envelopes that are labeled with the vendor's name. That way, when your wedding is wrapping up, you can thank your vendor in person and give them tip without having to stress out about dealing with them after the fact.

Write Your Thank-you Notes!

last minute wedding details
last minute wedding details

Boston's Terrier

A bit tedious, but it'll save you time after the wedding as well! Be sure to write thank-you notes to your guests and vendors, especially since they've most likely bought you and your spouse a gift or did you a service. Even if they didn't, write a thank-you note anyway because they took the time to attend your wedding and wish you and your spouse a happy marriage.

Plus, people just love receiving actual hand-written notes in the mail. Do this, and your level of awesomeness will automatically shoot up in people's eyes (as if it wasn't high enough already).

Prepare gifts for the wedding party

Je T'aime Beauty

Your party of friends have been with you through the wedding-planning process thick and thin. Express your thanks by preparing gifts for them! These gifts don't have to be extravagant or anything, but it does mean a lot to the people in your wedding party when you show that you took the time to put some effort and meaning into making gifts that they will appreciate. Popular gifts for the ladies usually consist of beauty products or jewelry, and for the guys? Fancy cigars and razors.

Prepare Your Emergency Day Kit

via 100 Layer Cake

Accidents happen all the time. Whether that's tripping in your gigantic floofy ball gown and falling onto the grass or having some drunk guest accidentally slosh his wine on your front, you need to take a deep breath and say, "Accidents happen." Good. Now you can prepare for it.

The bridal survival/emergency kit will have essentially all the little things that you need to fix things up, including Band-aids, wine-spot remover, chapstick, breath mints, and sewing needles and thread. While you might think to yourself that it's really not necessary to prepare all of these things, it's better to be safe than sorry. Otherwise, you might be mourning the loss of your beautiful vintage veil because you've accidentally torn it.

Confirm logistics with vendors (especially transportation and lodging)

last minute wedding details
last minute wedding details

Jose Villa

While confirming times with vendors seems like a big DUH, do your best to confirm with all of them anyway, ESPECIALLY when it comes to logistics regarding your guests. For me, I feel very antsy about transportation just because it always seems that traffic or getting lost gets in the way, and you don't want your guests to arrive late to your wedding. Additionally, be sure to check in with the hotel to make sure that all guests booking a room are accounted for. Nothing's quite as awkward as having a guest show up to the check-in counter just to find out that her room hasn't been reserved.

Prepare a list of must-have shots for the photographer

last minute wedding details
last minute wedding details

Ashlee Raubach

Taking pictures is hard work for both the photographer AND the models. If the photographer has to spend extra time coming up with ideas and guiding you and your fiancee into poses that you could have figured out and practiced beforehand, it takes away time from taking more photos. Not a good deal.

Brainstorm a couple of ideas for what sort of poses and shots you want  your photographer to get and relay that information to your photographer. That way, the photographer will be able to approach the venue with an idea of where and how to get the best shots while still getting what you want out of the bargain.

Fun and Easy DIY Wedding Decorations
by Kaitlin Perata

diy wedding
diy wedding

D. Lillian Photography

If you're an avid Pinterest user or self-proclaimed DIY-er, then this post may just be for you. Now, it goes without saying that there are some things in your wedding that you can DIY and some things that you should never ever DIY. In case you're having trouble remembering which is which, we have a post for that too! But, lucky for you, decorations ARE one thing that you can DIY, if you feel up for the challenge. And if that's the case then do we have some DIY wedding decorations for you!

If you do choose to DIY some or all of your wedding decorations, it might be best to keep a few things in mind. For starters, think about the venue. A DIY wedding is probably better suited for a smaller, more intimate ceremony and reception (think small backyard wedding) rather than a grand ballroom wedding with 200+ guests. Do you really want to spend your wedding planning time making paper garlands to decorate an entire ballroom? My guess is no.

Think about seasons. Continuing with the paper garland idea, paper garlands are probably better suited for spring and summer weddings rather than winter weddings. Especially if you have an outdoor wedding. The last thing you'd want is for the rain to wash away all your hard work.

Remember to plan ahead and take your time. Don't expect to be able to create all of your decorations in one night. Don't leave them until the week before the wedding! Test and evaluate your project before you commit to the final product.

So, if you're still up for a DIY wedding (or semi DIY wedding), then check out this list of DIY wedding decorations for ideas and inspiration!
