Over the years, promise rings have taken on many forms. When I began my research on what a promise ring is, I got several different answers. Some people view promise rings as "pre-engagement rings," or rings that pledge your love to your significant other and promise that one day in the future, you will get married. Another take on promise rings is between a parent and child, where a child promises to abstain from sex until marriage. While those are the most traditional takes on promise rings, I think promise rings can really mean a promise between two people on just about anything.
As lovers are often looking for grand gestures to profess their love for one another, promise rings seem like a pretty big step and a constant reminder of their promise to be together. These rings are often worn on the right ring finger or left middle finger, as not to be confused with an engagement ring.
That being said, promise rings are a huge commitment! While some couples may be ready to make that commitment to one another, financial situations or being too young may prevent them from planning their big day just yet, making promise rings the perfect solution.
While some people might think it's romantic, others might not. Some people believe that couples should just wait until they are ready to get married to do the ring thing - and that's definitely understandable. Some people also say that the act of giving a promise ring differs with age, meaning that it's an acceptable gesture for younger couples but anyone in their 20s should just be saving up for an engagement ring.
Promise rings can really be any ring (expensive or inexpensive), as long as it looks good on the hand of your significant other! For those of you who think that promise rings are a serious - but sweet and romantic - gesture, here are some beautiful (and fun!) promise rings to consider:
