The dance between a father and his daughter on her wedding day always is a heartfelt, symbolic moment on the big day – it’s the last time that your dad will get to dance with you as his “little girl,” and it’s a special few minutes that you get to spend solely with the man that raised you and ultimately got you ready for this moment.

That being said, you may be thinking that the pressure is on to pick the perfect father daughter dance song. Do you go with a classic? Country? Do you want to attempt to be the newest YouTube sensation with a choreographed number?

Coming from a woman who agonized for weeks over picking the right song for my first dance with my dad, take my advice when I say don’t sweat it! Although the song that I chose now holds a special place in my heart (it’s included in the list below!), I hardly can remember the few minutes that my dad and I spent dancing to it. We ended up talking through nearly the whole song, reminiscing about everything going on and keeping me laughing so I wouldn’t cry, that I only vaguely remember the song even playing in the background.

That’s my dad and I!

You do, however, want to choose a song that best reflects the relationship that you have with your dad, as well as one that compliments both your personalities. Perhaps you and your dad have a special song from your childhood - mine was “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” by Elton John from the Lion King, but I ultimately felt that was a little awkward to dance to – or maybe there’s a specific genre of music that you both love and always have bonded over. You can’t go wrong with keeping it classic and sentimental.

Here are a few of my picks from various genres to help get you inspired in picking your father daughter dance song.

Choosing a song from the oldies genre typically is a safe bet; most of the songs from these eras are crowd pleasers and easy to dance to. I grew up listening to nothing but oldies with my dad, so I knew that we would dance to either a song by The Beatles or James Taylor – my pick is the first in this list!

“You Can Close Your Eyes” by James Taylor

“Child of Mine” by Carol King

“In My Life” by The Beatles

“Father and Daughter” by Paul Simon

“Forever” by The Beach Boys (for a dose of pop culture, opt for the Jesse & The Rippers version from Full House!)

Country is one of the most popular genres of music today, which makes it a popular choice for this dance since most country songs tell a story.

“I Loved Her First” by Heartland

“Don’t Blink” by Kenny Chesney

“My Little Girl” by Tim McGraw

“Stealing Cinderella” by Chuck Wicks

“It Won’t Be Like This For Long” by Darius Rucker

Last but not least, it never hurts to go with a song that you hear on the radio or that has been popular in recent years. Just make sure that your dad is familiar with it first!

“Daughters” by John Mayer

“Everything” by Michael Buble

“Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns ‘n’ Roses (for a more subdued version, go with the Sheryl Crow cover)

“You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban

“Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton

Again, don’t stress too much about picking the perfect song for this moment – it should be one that only you and your dad ultimately will remember. Be sure to include him in the process, and hopefully you can make it fun by sharing ideas for songs back and forth!

We want to know: what song did you dance to at your wedding with your dad?
